James Gunn faces a major challenge in rebooting the Batman franchise within the DC Universe. In a June 2025 IGN interview, Gunn admitted, “Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now,” highlighting the pressure to portray this iconic character accurately. Although he is not writing the script for The Brave and The Bold himself, Gunn is heavily involved, working closely with the writer to ensure Batman retains his importance without becoming campy or humorous, a direction he firmly avoids.
On the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast (July 2025), Gunn revealed that this new Batman will have a clear place in the DC Universe (DCU). While it may not follow Matt Reeves’ Batman saga starring Robert Pattinson, Gunn aims to present a fresh yet faithful take. He hinted at incorporating the comic-book-style fantastical elements fans expect, alongside a grittier, more grounded tone.D
Deadline reported in September 2025 that many "big actors" are interested in playing Batman. Gunn is carefully considering those who can bring out the complexity and physicality the role demands. At an October Collider panel, Ben Barnes, rumored for the role, emphasized the need for an emotionally rich and physically intense Batman. Gunn also disclosed that The Brave and The Bold will not explore Batman’s origin story but will focus on his dynamic with his son, Damian Wayne, as Robin.

Recent social media updates, including a cameo by Gunn as Batman in Creature Commandos, confirm the character’s established presence in the DCU, hinting at future team-ups with Superman and new story dynamics.
Despite mixed fan reactions about having two Batmen, since Matt Reeves’ Batman is not part of the DCU, Gunn remains confident. His passion for the character assures fans of a new, captivating vision for Gotham’s Dark Knight.
