Indonesia's top badminton star, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, had to withdraw from the 2024 BWF Japan Open due to a recurring ankle injury. Ginting, who was competing in the men's singles category, was facing Japan's Yushi Tanaka in the first round when he made the tough decision to retire from the match.
The first set ended with Ginting losing 17-21, and early in the second set, he trailed 4-5. It was during a jump and subsequent landing that Ginting felt the discomfort in his left ankle worsen. Concerned about aggravating the injury, he opted to end the match. "Jadi, engkel kaki kiri saya berasa. Apalagi ada riwayat cedera di bagian itu. Saat persiapan juga terasa kurang enak dibagian engkel. Sudah saya coba main di gim pertama, tapi takutnya makin parah", Ginting explained post-match via PBSI Official. "Di gim kedua setelah beberapa poin, engkel saya terasa semakin tidak enak. Akhirnya saya putuskan mundur. Setelah ini saya akan fokus ke pemulihan". (AIT Sports)
Ginting’s withdrawal has left Indonesia with only one representative, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo, in the men's singles category, after Jonatan Christie also withdrew to be with his wife for the birth of their child.
With the 2024 BWF World Championships around the corner, Ginting will now shift his attention to recovery, hoping to be fit for the upcoming competitions.
