The popularity of "Plant Parenting" can be dated to the early 2020s, when the pandemic pushed urban Millennials and Gen Z to spend more time indoors. Many started transforming their apartments into indoor forests and caring for plants as a strategy to enhance their mental health as a result of feeling the need for stress relief and connection to nature.
The movement was mostly popularised through social media. Influencers that provide guidance and recommendations for plant care, such as Darryl Cheng, who is well-known for his Instagram account @houseplantjournal , have accumulated significant followings. The majority of Cheng's audience comprises urbanities. He explains, "Plant Parenting offers a sense of control and responsibility, It's therapeutic for many people to watch their plants thrive under their care."
For those interested in diving deeper into the world of plant parenting, there are a wealth of resources available. Platforms such Instagram remain the go-to hubs for plant care tips and community interaction. Popular accounts such as @houseplantjournal offer advice for both beginners and seasoned plant parents. Additionally, website like The National Gardening Association provide in-depth guides on sustainable gardening practices and plant care.
