BOOKS ARE MORE SOOTHING THAN SOCIAL MEDIA: IT’S TIME TO ENJOY SILENCE AGAIN

Have you ever opened social media for “just five minutes,” then suddenly an hour disappears and your head feels heavy? Many teenagers experience this, often without realizing how easily social media traps them in endless scrolling, trends, and fear of missing out. But behind the fun, overstimulation slowly drains our focus, leaving us tired yet strangely addicted. In contrast, reading books offers a quieter, healthier, and far more meaningful alternative for entertainment.

One reason many people avoid books is because reading is often labeled as “weird” or “boring.” Readers are mocked as bookworms, even though they are simply trying to broaden their knowledge. This mindset contributes to Indonesia’s low literacy levels. In reality, reading even one chapter can calm the mind—something social media rarely provides.

Social media overstimulates the brain. Every scroll delivers a burst of dopamine that keeps us hooked but mentally exhausted. The rapid flood of information makes the brain stressed and unable to focus on simple activities. Opening Instagram for “one story” often ends with watching dozens and feeling insecure afterward. Books offer the exact opposite: they slow the pace, reduce distractions, and allow the mind to breathe.

Reading trains deep focus. Without flashy visuals or loud audio, the brain can finally relax. Research from the University of Sussex shows that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%, outperforming music or walking. Books encourage reflection instead of reaction, letting readers connect with characters, ideas, and emotions on a deeper level.

Books also offer depth, not speed. Social media feeds are shallow and fleeting; books invite us to think, empathize, and understand meaning beyond the surface. Through reading, we “hear” the author’s voice and learn to sit with silence—a rare experience in today’s noisy digital world.

The digital era is not the enemy. But peace of mind fades when everything becomes nonstop stimulation. Maybe it’s time to silence notifications, pick up a book, and rediscover calmness. As Najwa Shihab said, “It takes one book to fall in love with reading. Find that book. Let yourself fall in love.”
