AI in Indonesia: Between Promise and Worry

AI in Indonesia: Between Promise and Worry

Imagine a college student named Andi, who uses ChatGPT to prepare his thesis presentation. For him, artificial intelligence (AI) is a helpful tool that saves time and organizes ideas. At the same time, picture Maya, a customer service worker, who feels anxious because her company is starting to use chatbots to answer customers. These two imagined examples show how AI can create both opportunities and concerns in society.

AI is rapidly growing in Indonesia. It can be found in education, business, health services, and even daily life. However, the regulation that controls AI is still very limited. There is no specific law that protects personal data, ensures ethical standards, or clarifies who should take responsibility when AI makes mistakes. Experts warn that this situation can be risky, especially because many people use AI without fully understanding its impact.

From an economic point of view, AI seems very promising. A global survey by PwC predicts that AI may add around 15.7 trillion dollars to the world’s economy by 2030. Businesses see it as a chance to be more productive and efficient. On the other hand, human rights activists raise concerns about bias in algorithms, privacy violations, and the risk of losing many jobs. Without strong regulation, the advantages of AI may only benefit certain groups, while the disadvantages could harm society more widely.

The Indonesian government has started discussing policies to regulate AI, but the progress is still slower than the technology itself. For Indonesia, AI could be a powerful driver of progress. Yet, without clear ethical standards and legal frameworks, it may also become a double-edged sword that threatens rather than supports society.
