In a major attack that took place on Wednesday, October 2,
2024, Iran fired at least 180 rockets at Tel Aviv, Israel. Most of the rockets
were caught by Israeli forces, but some of them hit the southern and central
districts, causing two minor injuries. In contrast, a piece of shrapnel killed
a Palestinian man near the city of Jericho.
These attacks increased the long-standing tension between the two countries. While Iran warned of a larger attack if Israel retaliated, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to stand up to Iran. The situation in the Middle East is heating up because of these pressures.
Israel
and Iran have long been engaged in a shadow war, but this is the first time
there has been a coordinated dispute of this magnitude. Israel accuses Iran of
building atomic weapons and supporting Arab militant groups.
Iran denies the accusations and states that it is ready to resume more serious attacks if Israel reacts. Prior to this attack, tensions escalated over a shooting that killed six people in Tel Aviv.
