What makes an actor able to get into the mind of a scientist haunted by the creation of an atomic bomb or a gangster full of inner wounds? For Cillian Murphy, the answer is totality. The Irish actor is known for never half-heartedly preparing for his roles.

Murphy built his reputation through deep dedication to each character. For the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, for example, he did extensive research, read biographies, watched recorded interviews, and adjusted his physique to be closer to the real thing. This transformation required him to lose weight drastically to appear thinner like Oppenheimer.
Cillian Murphy lost about 13 kilograms (around 28 pounds) to portray J. Robert Oppenheimer in the film Oppenheimer (2023), directed by Christopher Nolan. This significant weight loss was intended to match the physical appearance of Oppenheimer, who was depicted as a thin, emotionally drained figure, particularly in the later years of his life. Murphy mentioned that he achieved this weight loss in a controlled manner, under medical supervision, to ensure his health was not compromised.
The process of deepening his character is also seen in Peaky Blinders. To play Tommy Shelby, he not only adjusted his Birmingham accent, but also studied the history of British gangs and delved into the traumatized psychological side of the character. To really absorb into the role, Murphy even chose to reduce social interactions during filming.
Christopher Nolan, a director he has worked with many times, praised Murphy as an actor with the ability to bring out deep and subtle emotional feelings. Nolan also emphasized that Murphy was able to bring complexity to the character without going too far, making the character very human despite the extreme circumstances.
Cillian Murphy immerses himself in his roles, bringing genuine emotion to every character.
In an interview, Murphy revealed that every role he takes on leaves an emotional and physical impact on him. He said, “I feel connected to the characters I play; there's something about getting into their souls that's very satisfying.”
Murphy also spoke about the importance of using instinct in acting, stating, “Instinct is the most powerful tool you have as an actor. Nothing should be predetermined; you have to respond to the energy that's in the room”.This shows how seriously and totally he takes each character, ensuring that her performance is not just role-playing, but actually feeling it.
